We’ve recently gotten some good news that our troops will soon all be coming home! Service men and women have really been representing our country well. You might want to honor them this Halloween by dressing up in an Army costume of your choice.

The Army celebrated it’s 236th birthday on June 14th this year! Of all the services branches it has been around the longest. The uniforms they wear reflect the conditions of the part of the world that they are in. Because the latest conflicts have been in the desert, their uniforms have been desert camouflage.

Women soldiers have always been an important part of the military and now they have broken all barriers. Females occupy all job areas as well as combat positions. Freddy Krueger

Who Is Freddy Krueger?

This fictional character created by Wes Craven had been portrayed by Robert Englund. However in the 2010 remake this serial killer is being player by the Academy Award nominee, Jackie Earle Haley.

The film came out in 1984 managed to soar in the box offices due to the disfigured stalker who used a razor gloved arm to kill his victims. The best part about this killer is that he kills his victims in their deal which finally result in their death in the real world as well.

Now although Kruger can attack his victims in their own dreams when he comes into the real world and has the usual human strength and he is very vulnerable. Most of us identify this murderer by his disfigured face which is burned, along with his dark green and red striped sweater and the brown fedora and who can forget the metal clawed brown leather glove which is like his trademark.

Wes Craven first got his inspiration of this heartless serial killer after he read a few stories in the Los Angeles Times. Although Wes first thought to make Krueger a child molester, he turned him into a child killer in the end. Now most of his inspirations came from ma bully he knew in high school and also a homeless man who had apparently frightened him when he was eleven. He says that the inspiration for creating Freddy’s infamous clawed glove came form his cat.

The “A Nightmare on Elm Street” horror franchise consists basically of nine films along with a TV show and also comic books too. In this film the killer basically kills teenager but does so in their dreams. If you want to know about the motives of the killer, it basically was the usual, revenge on parents who had apparently burned him while he was still alive.

In the very first film, Freddy kills a group of teenagers but doesn’t succeed in killing one, Nancy Thompson. In the end Nancy defeats Freddy by pulling the plug on his dream world and bringing him back to reality where he is vulnerable and Nancy isn’t scared of him anymore.

In the second movie he comes back to the house where Nancy used to live only to posses a new victim who is helped by his girlfriend to get rid of the spirit. In the third movie there is the return of Nancy Thompson who realizes at all the kids on Elm Street are being killed by Freddy.

Chucky Doll & Child’s Play

Child’s Play Chucky Doll

If you are a complete sucker for this horror film series, you will know that there have been four sequels to the original movie titled “Child’s Play”, namely “Child’s Play 2”, “Child’s Play 3”, “Bride of Chucky” and “Seed of Chucky”. These movies have been releasing intermittently over a period of twelve years from 1988 till 2010. Don Mancini has been credited with penning this mega hit series.
 
From the screenplay to the story- Mancini has been on it throughout this time period. However, there have been five different producers for this series, the last one being Don Mancini himself. All the sequels have done reasonably well at the box office.

All the sequels are based around the spirit of a serial killer Charles Ray Lee, who tries to live beyond the police encounter by transferring his soul into a good guy doll’s plastic body with the help of voodoo magic. This entire process is induced by the fact that while on a run from the police, this serial murder takes shelter in a toy store and just before he is killed, he makes a successful transfer of his soul. On the same date the store is struck by lightning and it burns down.

On a different plane, little boy Andy asks his mother for a good guy doll and as fate would have it his mother Karen picks up the same good guy doll. This toy reveals himself to Andy as Chucky, through the voice feature of the doll. Initially Andy is unaware of the myriad grim possibilities that this doll entails. However, the doll kills his baby sitter and thereafter unleashes a series of crimes. The police force starts to get involved from here on.

As the story progresses, you get to learn that this toy can be killed only if it is shot at its heart. You also get to know that Chucky can extend his life by getting into the body of the person to whom he had revealed himself initially. Thereon starts Chucky’s attempts to get to Andy and the police force’s attempt to thwart Chucky’s moves and bury his body with the help of voodoo incantation.

The sequels always start off from the point of Chucky’s severed remains getting salvaged and the Chucky doll getting revived.  Only one of the sequels had a different turning point and a new twist to offer in the form of Bride of Chucky doll.

In this interesting sequel, Charles Ray Lee’s former girlfriend Tiffany takes the pain of reinstituting Chucky, after which the Chucky doll kills her off and transfers her soul into another bridal gown clad doll.

Together, they join another eloping high school couple on the highway to their doom. As both the couple try to enjoy their honeymoon on their own way, chaos, confusion and considerable bloodbath ensues.

The History and Customs of Halloween

The History and Customs of Halloween spans almost 3,000 years!

The history behind Halloween is long and there are some remarkable associations which, over millenniums of practice, survive in some form today.

The Celts were the first Halloween celebrants, around 2900 B.C., although the name of the original celebration was Samhain. The occasion of Samhain was to mark the end of their year, October 31, probably relating to the end of harvest.

However, the Celts also believed that the dead had their day each year on Samhain, allowed to roam the earth, sometimes disguised as animals. This put a little spookiness into the harvest season.

The Celts were pagans at this time. One of the customs on Samhain was to collect and exchange food to appease the gods and keep evil spirits at bay. To this end, they dressed in costumes, wearing and brandishing scary masks, designed to frighten off these evil spirits, in much the same way gargoyles were later used on churches.

Bonfires were also customary, as an added measure to ensure the evil spirits did not gain a foothold in their community. So costumes, masks, pumpkins and treats were an integral part of the history behind Halloween from the beginning.

Christians converted the pagan Samhain celebration into a Christian celebration of Halloween, followed on November 1 by All Saint’s Day. This cleverly served to divert the offerings to pagan gods and point celebrants in a Christian direction. This strategy did, eventually succeed.

Over a period of hundreds of years, Halloween gradually picked up superstitious myths and stories, some still hanging on to the pagan rituals and ideas. So, today’s ghost stories around the campfire became part of the history behind Halloween traditions.

While Halloween began as a celebration and ritual holiday for adults, in the early part of the 20th century, the adults started behaving badly, with malicious acts overshadowing the treat aspect. The malicious tricks became so severe, the history behind Halloween might have ended there. People banded together to preserve this fun holiday tradition for kids only. For about 50 years thereafter, adults didn’t go trick or treating.

Around the 1980s, adults celebrating Halloween came back in vogue. Although most adults still don’t go trick or treating, due to the typically chilly reception they receive, they do attend adult Halloween parties where the host provides the treats and everyone gets into costumes, just as the ancient Celts did.
