Which is the Best Ebook Reader Out There Right Now?

Unless you’ve been on a vacation from life, you have to have noticed that everywhere you turn, there is one kind of publication or another that’s blue in the face trumpeting Amazon’s new version of its Kindle ebook readers, and what is supposed to be Kindle killer, Apple’s iPad tablet computer.

This will go back and forth as new ones come out but like all things there will always be another on in development somewhere so you need to find one that does what you want and that you’re going to be happy with.

Of course, the iPad is slick, powerful and affordable as all things Apple are, and it conceivably will overtake the Kindle as the e-book reader of the future. But the drumbeat on for these two can drown out a whole lot more that’s going on in the market in devices that can be used as ebook readers, on top of a lot of other things.

The New Amazon Kindle Review

Yes there many reason for buying the new kindle, but is it right for you? So what are the pros and cons of it!

One might expect to read e-books on the kindle that are already there in the computer by just transferring them to the kindle. But there’s a lot more to it that just that. Content can be downloaded directly from amazon or any other website as it can access wireless internet with Sprint broadband coverage.

The best thing is to have all kinds of books, notes, journals any other kind of reading material right in ones palm, because no one knows when you might be in need of what. There are even options to highlight a particular text, add a note at any intended point, and take the help of the dictionary which is there right at the bottom, when there’s any help needed with unfamiliar words.

One major drawback of reading from the computer is that the screen is backlit and can cause headaches when read on a continuous basis. But the kindle’s screen is not backlit and hence one can read from it just like a book. The cable used to charge it is the same used to connect it to the computer, which is very convenient.

There’s even the text to speech feature in this gadget which makes it really attractive for those who can’t stop reading while doing other work. It also has built-in speakers that are really loud and impressive. Its physical features too are appealing as its sleek and compact body makes it easy to hold.

The gadget can be considered a boon to older people who have strong ties to their habit of reading and never get enough of it. It has memory equal to a ton books and can be a great gift to retired people.

Coming to the cons of the kindle, there are quite a few features that customers find disappointing and expect improvisation. There are complaints that the “table of contents” is non-functional, which can be very frustrating as the reader may not be able to jump ahead or back from one chapter to the other. There is no option of having an SD card inserted in the gadget which makes it limited to the memory it already holds.

The battery is not user-replaceable. This means the kindle has to be sent back to Amazon if there’s a need to change the battery. Though the screen can be an advantage when compared to computer screen during the day, it is impossible to read from the kindle during night/in the dark, as the screen uses natural light and is not backlit.

Finally, the price is considered a bit more than what it deserves for a big lot of the customers, as it does not include a case and has a warranty of only 1 year. Extended warranty is available, though for an extra cost.

Well, even if you have found a great selection of ebooks for your child, there is still one problem. Not all computers come with the software needed to open these files!

Not all companies release their ebooks in the same format, but many of them will offer you a couple different format choices.

The easiest format to use and manipulate is the PDF format. This is a format developed by Adobe Acrobat which sometimes comes pre installed on computers.

Most textbooks for online colleges come in this format. It is very easy to use and completely free unless you want to use the very advanced options.

If you have a Palm Pilot, Pocket PC, or handheld Windows device, you can use I Silo Reader. Unfortunately, this only offers you a 14 day free trial before you have to purchase it.

Mobipocket Reader is an alternative to this because you get a 14 day free trial but you can use it for free even after it expires. You just don’t have access to advanced features.

Obviously, these different types of reader programs will vary depending on your preferred device. Even a Sony PSP can be used for ebooks as well as a blackberry.

Many people don’t feel comfortable letting children use any of these handheld devices because they can be quite pricey.

But there are cheaper versions out there and you could always buy a second hand one or refurbished one to keep the price down.

When my girlfriend first suggested that I get a portable electronic book reader, I was a little bit sceptical. Although I have been an avid reader for many years and a high tech geek for almost as long, ebook readers seemed to make me just a little bit nervous.

I was so used to the process of reading normal books. I loved being able to just curl up with a good novel and hang out all afternoon, lying in bed and reading it. An electronic book reader seemed so artificial in comparison to the feeling of paper under my fingers.

Nonetheless, I decided to finally break down and get one. I was already reading e-books online and, although I didn’t really like sitting at my computer screen to read novels, I couldn’t deny the convenience of it. Whatever I thought about reading online books, my Adobe ebook reader was even better. Although wasn’t quite as satisfying to hold as a novel, it was still good, and it did have some advantages.

The main one was that I could carry quite a few books with me at any one time. I’m the kind of person who can’t decide on which book to read before I get to a place. Usually, this means bringing half a dozen books or so with me pretty much everywhere I go. With electronic book readers, however, I can bring many more books and still not have to carry anything very heavy. All I have to take along is one electronic box that is about the size of a book.

I discovered that the feel of it and the design and layout were all surprisingly good. It was pretty compact, but substantial enough to feel rugged and concrete in my hands.  The print was very easy-to-read, the interface was easy to use, and there were not any real features that I wanted which were missing. The price was right too. I took advantage of a promo, and got my ebook reader very cheap. It ended up costing me about half as much as the normal retail price, and I did not even have to bargain hunt.

I do not think that electronic book readers will ever fully take the place of novels, but they certainly will compliment them. If you want to be able to read a book over and over again, treasure it, and make notes on it, get a paper copy. If, on the other hand, you just want to kick back and read it once or twice, an ebook reader is probably the best solution.

It took me a long time to get used to reading electronic books instead of traditional print versions. I had trouble adjusting to the backlighting and font size, and often got headaches if I stared at my computer screen for too long. But now that I’m more accustomed to reading off a screen, I’ve grown to appreciate the convenience of ebooks, and I actually prefer them to paper books. In fact, I’m currently in the market for a good handheld ebook reader that will allow me to enjoy my electronic texts even more.

I’ve been doing some research for the last few days, and I’ve discovered that there are essentially three different kinds of handheld ebook readers on the market today. I’m not exactly sure which one I want yet because they all have their pros and cons.

The first type of handheld ebook reader I can buy is a PDA (or Pocket PC). While PDAs are most commonly used for keeping track of appointments, tasks, and contacts, they’re also capable of displaying electronic texts. I like PDAs because they’re easy to carry around, have relatively large screens, and can store a lot of books.

However, since PDAs come with a bunch of other features such as a web browser, word processing and spreadsheet software, and games, the prices are a bit inflated. I’d essentially be paying for a lot of things I’d probably never use, when all I really want is a handheld ebook reader.

Smart phones represent a second type of handheld ebook readers available today. Smart phones combine the functionality of a cell phone with a PDA, so they can generally do everything that PDAs can do — plus make phone calls. The biggest benefit to using a smart phone is that I would only have to carry one device around instead of two.

But I think most smart phone screens are a bit small for reading books on a regular basis, so I’m not sure that this would be the right device for me. In addition, most smart phones are actually priced out of my budget, which means this isn’t really a viable option for me.

Finally, there are a couple of dedicated handheld ebook readers on the market, too. These devices are only used for reading books, so they typically have special features that smart phones and PDAs don’t have, such as automatic scrolling, a comprehensive dictionary, adjustable backlighting, and a variety of font sizes. The Amazon Kindle is the hottest handheld ebook reader around, and looks like the best device for my purposes.

I haven’t completely made up my mind about which handheld ebook reader I’ll purchase, but I’m definitely going to get one soon. I can’t wait to be able to read my favourite electronic texts even when I’m away from my computer!
